Shop to Give

Passive Fundraising allows families, relatives, and friends to financially support Alice Birney while doing their everyday shopping. Contact Erika Hedglin ( for more information. Last year alone, Passive Fundraising made $10,000 of our overall fundraising goal! If you are out shopping and not registered, we are losing money!

Alice Birney EK-8 School participates in several passive fundraising programs.  What is passive fundraising?  Earning money by doing stuff you’d do anyway, like buy groceries, surf the web, dine out, shop, etc.

Super easy!  Here are some of the programs:

This a mobile electronic gift card app. Many of the same companies are there as on eScrip, and even Safeway and Target. You can buy a gift card for say, Lowes, while you’re in line and redeem it by the time you get to the register. You can even “double-dip” (term coined at meeting) and shop through the school’s NEW Shutterfly portal! Download it here:

Attention Shutterfly users! You can now help our school receive a 13% donation of your order amount just by going through our Shutterfly storefront: This includes the websites tinyprints, Borrowlenses, and Wedding Paper Divas. Take a moment to check it out and be sure to share with your friends and families.

This program donates about .01 for every search through their yahoo powered search engine.  If you shop online, by going through this site first and shopping through stores on their links, a portion of your purchase is donated to the school.   You can also download a tool bar to capture all the donations without having to think about it.  A separate dining rewards program is also available through this site.  Go to the website and search for Alice Birney Waldorf Inspired K-8 and follow the instructions and you’ll be all set.

This program isn’t limited to the internet!!  Once you register your debit, credit and supermarket cards portions of purchases from participating merchants start coming in.  You can also check your contributions on line and see just how much you spent for the month.  Just go to website, click on “sign-up” and follow instructions.  Our school ID is 6521824 or you can just search under Alice Birney Waldorf Inspired.  Please enter VISA debit cards twice; once as an ATM and once as a VISA, so purchases via both networks are credited.

Like Goodsearch, you can also shop online through this site through participating merchants and a portion of your purchase will be donated to the school.  E-scrip also has a downloadable toolbar for brain free saving.

If you shop at Safeway and don’t know your club card number, because we all use our telephone number for that anyway, call 1-800-SAFEWAY and they will be able to tell you your actual number to sign up with on e-scrip.  Be sure to renew your Safeway escrip registration once a year to keep those donations coming.

Target Cards

Do you shop at Target?  By registering your Target red card, Target debit card or Target Visa card under Target’s Take Charge of Education program, a portion of your Target purchases is donated to our school.  At last check, we only had 35 card members registered!  This is a great program to participate in.  Here’s how to do it:  Go to, scroll to the bottom of the page to the Take Charge of Education link, search under Sacramento, CA for A Birney, ID 112279.  Get your friends, family, co-workers and random acquaintances to sign up for us too.  You can also call 1-800-316-6142 to register your cards.

Nugget/Food 4 Less Scrip Cards

Nugget has started up a scrip program similar to Raley’s Quality of Life card program. Just pick up a card at our front office, register the card at the above website, and swipe your card at checkout for a portion of your purchase amount to come back to the school. Pick up cards for your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and anyone else you know who shops at Nugget or Food 4 Less. Remember to renew via Nugget’s website every August. Here’s the link:

CARS donations

Do you have a vehicle you no longer wish to own, even if it doesn’t run?  Donate it to us through CARS.  Just click on the link above and schedule a pick up – they do the rest.  They will even provide the receipt for your taxes once the vehicles sells.

United Way donations

Does your employer encourage your participation in United Way? An easy way to help our school and satisfy your employer’s yen for a gold United Way star is to list our 501(c)3 organization, the Alice Birney Parent Guild, as your beneficiary. Here’s the information you will need:

our EIN is 68-0413592

Alice Birney Parent Guild 6251 13th Street Sacramento CA  95831 916-433-5544

United Way doesn’t always provide the names of their donors for us, but please know you are appreciated. For these donations you would use United Way for tax purposes.

Remember the shampoo commercial, “and they told two friends, and they told two friends, and so on and so on….”?  The key to passive fundraising is to have a wide base of participants.  All of us have family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and associates.  People like to help, so ask them – this is the easiest fund raising you can do for our school.  Just do it”!
